Short description

In Rooted in Research, you will engage in artistic research in an interdisciplinary context. You will collaborate with students from other disciplines, share ideas, reflect together and learn to see things from different perspectives. An artist-researcher will guide the process and introduce you to the world of artistic research. This will not only sharpen your gaze, but also your way of thinking, talking and collaborating as an artist. You will develop an inquiring attitude within the safe and reflective learning environment of the Academy.

Educational organisation (text)

The lessons take place at campus North every week on Monday from 13:00 to 15:00 in the first semester.

Course content

Rooted in Research by MaxLab: Immersive Storytelling

Digital technology offers artists unprecedented opportunities to create compelling experiences that fully immerse the audience. In Immersive Storytelling, you will learn how to construct such narratives, combining artistic insight with technological support.

Because digital art practices often require complex skills, and artists often call on technical expertise in practice, you will also work in interdisciplinary teams with students from other programmes, including outside the arts. During weekly workshops, you will develop an artistic digital project from concept to prototype and create an immersive experience together. You will contribute content based on your own expertise and use professional tools in the Immersive Lab and the MixLab, such as a green key studio, motion capture and 3D scanning. No prior knowledge of technology is required – a genuine interest in the medium is sufficient.

You will delve into the core of immersive storytelling: definitions, terminology, the concept of immersion and the ways in which you can integrate this into a story. You will be taught techniques and tools related to storytelling, narrative structures and design strategies. Through inspiring case studies, you will explore applications of immersive storytelling within the arts and in a social context. In addition, you will learn how to efficiently plan, monitor and critically evaluate the workflow of a digital project, with an eye for artistic quality.
