Course content

Course Content 1

Basic Metalworking Skills

Introduction to the safe use of tools, machinery, and infrastructure within the metal workshop.
Basic metalworking skills such as marking out, drilling, sawing, grinding, bending, shaping, and assembling steel and non-ferrous metals.
Introduction to elementary welding techniques (SMAW/shielded metal arc welding), including striking and stopping the arc, welding beads, and simple welding positions.
Insight into material properties, joining techniques, and safety regulations within workshop practice.

Course Content 2

Technical Welding Exercises

Technical exercises aimed at developing control over the welding process, materials, and metal joints.
Exercises in different welding techniques and welding positions, including edge welding, weaving motions, build-up welding on plate material, groove welding, and vertical ascending or descending welding.
Exploration of the technical possibilities and limitations of steel and non-ferrous metals within constructive applications.
Introduction to the basic principles of semi-automatic welding (MIG/MAG) and TIG welding where relevant within the workshop trajectory.

Course Content 3

Exploration of Metal within an Artistic Practice

Application of technical exercises within simple sculptural and artistic assignments.
Experimentation with form, joining, construction, and material expression in metal.
Investigation of the relationship between technical control, material choice, and visual form.
Development of an initial personal approach to metal as an artistic medium within sculptural practice.
