Course content

Course Content 1

  • Introduction to stone and wood sculpture as a subtractive sculptural practice.
  • Introduction to different types of stone and wood, their properties, applications, and technical possibilities.
  • Introduction to hand tools, machinery, and safety procedures within the workshop environment.
  • Development of basic skills in the use of tools and simple stone- and woodworking techniques.
  • First experiments with material sensitivity, form studies, and spatial awareness within a subtractive working process.

Course Content 2

  • Exercises focused on observation, form analysis, volume, composition, and spatial relationships within stone and wood sculpture.
  • Investigation of light, shadow, line, and transitions between volumes within three-dimensional form.
  • Development of insight into the subtractive process in which material is intentionally removed to develop sculptural form.
  • Introduction to simple sketches, clay models, and preparatory studies as support for the sculptural process.

Course Content 3

  • Translation of a simple design or model into stone or wood through measuring, marking, and constructive development.
  • Exercises in the systematic development of sculptural forms from large volumes to smaller details.
  • Attention to proportion, composition, finishing, and presentation within the sculptural process.
  • Development of concentration, patience, and precision within a slow and deliberate working method.
