The student knows the possibilities and main properties of ceramic clays.
The student knows the different construction techniques of the ceramic process.
The student knows the drying and firing process.

Course content

Course Content 1

  • Introduction to clay as a material, its geological origins, and physical properties.
  • Introduction to different types of clay and their technical and sculptural possibilities.
  • Exercises in wetting, kneading, storing, joining, and working with clay.
  • Developing an understanding of the relationship between material behavior and design within the ceramic process.

Course Content 2

  • Introduction to various hand-building techniques, including pot-throwing, coiling, colombine, and slab techniques.
  • Exercises focused on volume, construction, stability, and spatial design.
  • Experiments with cylinders, hollow forms, and geometric structures in ceramic sculpture.
  • Development of an understanding of the relationship between form, construction, and material.

Course Content 3

  • Introduction to finishing techniques such as iron oxides, engobes, and glazes.
  • Introduction to the formulation of glazes and their influence on surface and color.
  • Development of an understanding of drying processes, firing processes, and the technical aspects of ceramic production.
  • Emphasis on order, cleanliness, safety, and careful handling of materials and studio infrastructure.
