Short description

In this expert class, you will gain a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of type design and learn to work with the professional font software Glyphs. You will develop your own functional typeface and apply it within the design context of a type specimen. In doing so, you will explore type anatomy, optical correction, rhythm and consistency in character sets. You will go through the entire design process – from concept and form study to digitisation, spacing, kerning and the generation of a digital font file. Throughout the process, you will take into account professional standards within the (typo)graphic sector, as well as the technical and material limitations of the graphic production process. The end result is a professional digital font and a finished type specimen.

Within this course module, there is an additional cost for a site visit related to the assignment, any (test) prints, basic drawing/sketching materials, a sketchbook, etc.
