Short description

In Portfolio: Artistic Practice, students compile personal, educational, and dance‑field‑related experiences into a thoughtful, multimedia reflection on their artistic development. They present their process at interim moments and actively participate in showings that emphasize making thinking and creation visible. In addition, they follow the build‑up of the Master Festival as an observational practice to gain insight into the translation of artistic research into a performative context.

Course content

In Portfolio: Artistic Practice, students make a selection of personal, educational, and dance‑field‑related material and bring it together in a consolidated reflection. It is a thoughtful and carefully designed presentation of the key developments the students have experienced and that have contributed to shaping their (artistic) identity. The portfolio consists of multimedia material, ranging from text to images, collage, video, and audio, and, in the case of a presentation, practical examples. The individual design is part of the research and the discussion with the teacher and with peers.

In connection with this portfolio, the student attends the three intermediate showings of the master’s year and actively participates in the third intermediate showing by sharing their artistic practice as it has developed up to that point. This presentation can take various forms: a performative showing, a (lecture‑)performance, or a discursive presentation highlighting the artistic trajectory, as well as the questions and shifts within the research process. The emphasis lies on making the process of thinking and making visible, rather than on presenting a finalised end product.

As a third component of Portfolio: Artistic Practice, students are expected to be present during the build‑up week of the Master Festival of the master’s students. This presence functions as a preparatory and observational practice through which students gain insight into the translation of artistic research into a performative context within the framework of a master’s thesis. By following this process, they acquire an initial, concrete understanding of how an individual artistic practice can materialise into a performance, and how concept, dramaturgy, production, and presentation relate to one another within a professional setting.
